Ingredients

  • 2 large baking apples, such as Honeycrisp or Braeburn
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 tablespoons chopped walnuts
  • 1/4 cup store-bought or homemade caramel sauce
  • 1/4 cup fresh apple cider or water

Steps

  1. 1

    1. Preheat the oven to 375°F. Core each apple from the top, stopping about half an inch from the base to create a deep cavity, then widen it slightly with a spoon.

  2. 2

    2. Mix the oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, butter, and walnuts together in a small bowl until the mixture clumps together.

  3. 3

    3. Pack the oat filling firmly into each apple cavity, mounding it slightly at the top.

  4. 4

    4. Place the stuffed apples in a snug ceramic or baking dish and pour the cider into the base of the dish to keep the apples moist during baking.

  5. 5

    5. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, until the apples are tender when pierced with a knife and the oat topping is golden.

  6. 6

    6. Let the apples rest for 5 minutes, then drizzle generously with warm caramel sauce before serving.
