Apple Crumble

Bubbling cinnamon-spiced apples under a buttery golden oat topping, baked until caramelized and crisp.

Ingredients

  • 6 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced 1cm thick
  • 2 tbsp dark brown sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 3/4 cup plain flour
  • 1/2 cup light brown sugar
  • 115g cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1/4 tsp fine sea salt

Steps

  1. 1

Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Toss the sliced apples with the dark brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and vanilla extract until evenly coated, then spread them into a greased ceramic baking dish.

  2. 2

In a large bowl, combine the oats, flour, light brown sugar, and salt. Add the cold cubed butter and rub it in with your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse, clumpy breadcrumbs with pea-sized chunks of butter remaining.

  3. 3

Scatter the crumble topping evenly over the apple filling, pressing it down very lightly so it sits in an even layer without compacting.

  4. 4

Bake for 40–45 minutes until the topping is deep golden and the apple filling is visibly bubbling around the edges.

  5. 5

Remove from the oven and rest for 10 minutes before serving — this lets the filling thicken slightly and makes it easier to scoop.
